Skagit Night Hawks

Introduction

Skagit Night Hawks are runners who like to run trails at night using headlamps to almost, but not quite, light the way. Petzl and Black Diamond are headlamps of choice for the Night Hawks, though other lights are available. Favorite trails include Lake Padden Mudfest trail; Squires Lake/Baldy trail; Blanchard trails, including Mad Max; South Baker Lake Trail; and Whistle Lake in Anacortes—to name just a few. During November through March, the Night Hawks fly on a regular basis. If you wish to join us some time, email Dean for information on when the next run will be. Speed is not a requirement, though it could help if the right predator is about. Charged batteries are essential. Courage is a must. Slow runners with weak batteries and bountiful courage can help keep the cougars busy while the rest of us run away. There was an article in the Skagit Valley Herald about the Night Hawks run on Cultus Mountain. There was also an article about the Nighthawks in Runner's World.

Race Name: 3rd Annual Northern Lights 5 Miler - An Almost Winter Solstice Headlamp Run

Date: CANCELLED FOR 2008

Time: N/A

Message from Dean about 2008 cancellation: As much as it pains me, I have to cancel this Friday's HEADLAMP run, The Northern Lights 5 Mile Headlamp Run, out at Northern State. I just returned from a run there and although it was a glorious headlamp run (really didn't need the headlamp), the parking lot is about 16 inches deep and a mess, not to mention the road is a skating rink. Other than that, it would be a nice run. Nice foot deep powder! Only ran off course into the field once and I know the route! BUT I don't want to get someone killed coming out to have fun with me!!! Sorry and hopefully everyone will be like me and get out somewhere Friday night for a nice snow run in the dark!!! Thanks and see you somewhere next Solstice.........

Location: Northern State Recreational Area in Sedro-Woolley

Directions: Meet at parking lot of Northern State Recreation Site, due East of Sedro-Woolley on Highway 20. Turn left on Helmick Road (signed for Upper Skagit Indian Reservation). Look for lanterns lighting the parking area. It is DARK!!!

Details: Cross country type run but without the spikes! Course is field roads, old gravel roads, grassy paths and gravel trail. Interesting out and back course. Headlamp required!

Entry Donation: $2 to cover food and drink. Register night of race only.
